SEATTLE ANNUAL MEETING

NEWS

WORDS FROM THE EDITOR

Ting James

Dear friends:

How time flies! AALL’s 96th Annual Meeting and Conference in Seattle is just around the corner. I am really looking forward to it not only for the meeting, but also for meeting friends and seeing the city. I would like to take this opportunity to announce our meeting and agenda (see below). Our business meeting will be held on July 14th from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. The location should be found in the final program book. We will have committee reports and elect our President-elect and Treasurer. We will also discuss contributions to the AALL Scholarship fund. Thanks to Swee Berkey and Robert Hu, AALLC now has its very own bookmark and poster. The bookmark design is a red dragon on the front and a few words on the back. She used the same design for the poster. According to Swee who took the initiative in designing the bookmark, the "Dragon is a common symbol of Asia." I hope everybody will enjoy the bookmark and also disseminate it to your friends and others. We will place posters on bulletin boards at the conference in order to encourage old and new members to join us at business meeting, museum and dinner. Thanks also to Pin-sheng’s effort, we will be able to tour the Seattle Asian Art Museum. Look for Pin’s announcement of the tour schedule. Finally, we will have our traditional get-together dinner on Tuesday, July 15th, after the museum tour. The cost of the meal is estimated to be around $25.00 per person. For those people who cannot make the museum tour but would like to join the dinner, we will meet at the registration desk around 5:15 p.m. to go to the Chinese restaurant China Harbor. Please send an email to me at jamests@SLU.EDU before July 9th if you plan to go to the dinner so I can make reservations for us. Thank you!

Please email me if you have any other items to place on the agenda. I look forward to seeing everyone in Seattle!

Ting

SEATTLE ANNUAL MEETING

AALLC Nominations Committee 2002/2003 Report

The AALLC Nominations Committee of 2002/2003 is very pleased to announce the nominations for the positions of Vice-President/President-elect and Secretary/Treasurer. Our two nominees represent both the seasoned and the fairly-new-but-not-too-new members of the Caucus.

Robert H. Hu, Texas Tech University School of Law Library, has been with the Caucus for about ten years, attending both the annual meetings and the luncheons/dinners. He founded the Caucus newsletter and shepherded it for the first three years of its existence. Bob has also served the Caucus as Secretary/Treasurer and as a member of the Nominations Committee.

His nomination as Vice-President/President-elect is very well-deserved and long overdue. The Nominations Committee is delighted that he has accepted the nomination. If elected at the business meeting in Seattle, Robert will serve as Vice-President for 2003/2004 and as President for 2004/2005.

For the position of Secretary/Treasurer, we did a "Cheney." Yuan Yao, Georgetown University Law Library, is a member of this year’s Nominations Committee. However, Swee Berkey (another member) and I decided that we want to nominate him for the two-year position of Secretary/Treasurer. Please note that Yuan did not nominate himself--he only agreed to accept the nomination.

Yuan joined AALLC in 1999 and has been active since. In addition to being on this year’s Nominations Committee, he has served on the Caucus’s Program Committee. If elected at the business meeting in Seattle, Yuan will serve as Secretary/Treasurer for 2003/2004 and 2004/2005.

The members of the Committee are: Swee Berkey, Yuan Yao, and Mila Rush as chair.

Seattle Asian Art Museum Tour

The Program Committee is glad to announce that the Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM) tour for our members has been scheduled for July 15th at 3 p.m. The tour will be led by a guide ($3 per person, minimum of 10 people). We will meet at Registration Desk at 2:30 p.m. and take the bus to the museum. If you are interested and haven't yet notified Pin-sheng Hsiao, please email her at phsiao@reedsmith.com to confirm your reservation.

Following the museum tour is our annual dinner. The dinner will be held at China Harbor Restaurant (2040 Westlake Avenue North, Seattle, WA 98109). Please contact Ting James at jamests@SLU.EDU for reservations. For those of you who only plan to go to dinner, please meet at the registration desk around 5:15 p.m.

AALLNET Advisory Committee’s Webmasters Workshop

George A. Strait Minority Scholarship Fundraising Campaign

We’ve heard a lot recently about the George A. Strait Minority Scholarship Fund. West Group generously contribution to endow the fund and has challenged AALL to raise an additional $100,000 for the endowment. AALLC member Frank Liu recently posted an open letter to the caucus about the fund; because this is such an important fund for minority librarians (and minority librarians-to-be), the letter is reprinted below.

Dear Colleagues:

As you know, there is a George A. Strait Minority Scholarship Fundraising Campaign going on at the AALL.

In 2001 West contributed $150,000 to endow the scholarship. That contribution contained a challenge to AALL to raise an additional $100,000. The AALL has accepted the challenge and set the goal for raising that amount by 2005. So far, we have raised $20,000. While it is a good start, we still have a long way to go.

I knew George personally; he was a giant in our profession, and an excellent role model for law librarianship in general, and for minority law librarians in particular. To contribute to the scholarship will not only honor his legacy, but also encourage and support aspiring young people to enter our wonderful profession.

AALL is a fair, open, responsive and democratic professional organization. Any member who is willing to volunteer his or her services is always encouraged, supported and recognized. Many Asian American law librarians have served as members or leaders in committees, task forces, workshops, etc. Three Asian American law librarians, Paul Fu, Cossette Sun and Frank Liu were elected to the top leadership positions as members of the Executive Board of AALL.The outstanding AALL educational and professional programs have helped all of us in our personal and professional growth. The friendship we have developed through the AALL networks will last a lifetime. Personally, I cannot think of a professional life without the guidance and support of the AALL.

AALL is really our professional home and family. We must support it and help it to grow and prosper, so future generations of law librarians can nurture and mature in it. Contributing to the George A. Strait Scholarship fund is a concrete step for doing that. Won't you please join me to support AALL to meet its challenge for raising $100,000 as soon as possible. You can access the contribution form on AALLNET athttp://www.aallnet.org/services/strait_contribution.rtf

Thank you for your attention. See you in Seattle!

With my best,

Frank
