Programming for Seattle - What are brain- friendly strategies?

There are several brain-friendly strategies that you should consider when preparing your proposal.

  1. Talking trumps thinking
    1. People remember better when they’re actively involved in a program, like discussing the issues with colleagues as opposed to just listening to a lecture.
  2. Chunking content in 10-minute sections
    1. Try to separate your content into ten minute sections, such as spending ten minutes on lecturing, then allowing for ten minutes of group discussion, then ten minutes on lecturing or trying something different.
  3. Images trump words
    1. Eighty percent of our brain’s processing power is devoted to visuals.  When creating Powerpoint slides try to condense long sentences and paragraphs into a few words and try to us large, memorable images.
  4. Questions trump Data
    1. Sometimes it is better to propose questions without initially giving the answers.  The brain is always trying to answer questions, which keeps the observer engaged.  Try to avoid
    2. presentation slides with columns of data.
