Dear AALL Colleagues, 

I am writing on behalf of the AALL Executive Board to express our deep concern for all AALL colleagues whose lives and jobs have been affected by Hurricane Sandy. 

We encourage members to offer whatever professional assistance they can to affected colleagues. 

You can also donate to organizations like the American Red Cross. To donate, visit www.redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Information on Disaster Help and Resources is available at www.disasterassistance.gov.

Please use this blog to share information about resource needs, available assistance, or ways the AALL community can assist you.

NELP Disaster Assistance Training For Small Businesses The City Bar Justice Center's Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project (NELP) and partnering law firms will be holding an introductory training for attorneys interested in volunteering to assist small business owners who were adversely affected by Hurricane Sandy. The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) has mobilized a "Storm Response Unit" to provide disaster relief for storm victims who now face an array of urgent legal issues. via a live webinar on Friday, November 9th from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. The 90-minute training will cover the basics of storm-related legal issues

Any word from our New Jersey colleagues, especially Newark. I hear that all the big Newark firms, Sills ; Gibbons ; McCarter have had to evacuate due to flooding and extensive damage to the power grid. What about the NJ law schools?
Add Strook to the law firms in lower Manattan unable to get into thier buildings.
Are any firms taking advantage of West or Lexis or HeinOnlines offers of assistance. Are other publishers helping?

Thank you so much for your valuable message, and to AALL for setting up the blog. I am glad to hear that Kenyon & Kenyon has managed to re-open, as has Hughes Hubbard, according to Director of Library Services Patricia Barbone. The lawyers and administrative staff of Cahill Gordon have been placed in some scattered temporary space, according to Caren Biberman, Director of Library & Information Services, until they are able to return to their offices at 80 Pine St.
I read that law schools in the New York and northern New Jersey area have opened their libraries to faculty and students at partner schools who could not reach their home campuses. I assume alumni of those institutions could also avail themselves of the resources. I'm glad to hear that the New York Law Institute has re-opened.
Let's continue to share as much information as possible and be responsive to each other in this time of need. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has experienced difficulties in dealing with this situation.

Any independents available for overflow ?I just heard from Kathie Sullivan who says that her wife Alison Alifano is ok and confirmed that Sullivan has had to relocate.
Kathie writes " If you hear of anyone I can back up with some reference work, let me know. I have a medical and university library close by, I have Lexis account. "

Kenyon & Kenyon LLP's NY City office is open but our office telephones are still down. We are very grateful that the entire NY staff came through the storm with the minimum of damage to their homes and have had power restored. All of us made it into the office today. Are any of the other downtown firms out OK. We have heard the NY Law Institute is ok but that several firms may have had to evacuate their buildings and relocate. Most of the law schools seem to be back in session, but that needs to be confirmed. It is my understanding that all the city, state and federal courts are on limited schedules today. And, have no information about the situation in hard hit south Jersey or suburban Nassau County NY. Both areas sustained significant damage, so I am sure some of our members may need personal assistance with housing and everyday necessities. Lucy Curci-Gonzalez Kenyon Library Director
